Curaçao Travel Tips: What First-Timers Need to Know

Curaçao is one of the easier Caribbean islands to travel — friendly, safe-feeling, and refreshingly practical, with a European-Caribbean mix that makes independent travel very doable. But a handful of things catch first-timers off guard. Here's what we wish we'd known before our first trip.
Rent a car — it's the single best decision
Curaçao's best beaches, food, and nature are spread across the island, and you'll miss most of them without wheels. Taxis add up fast and buses are slow. A rental car turns a good trip into a great one — and they drive on the right here, just like the US, so it feels familiar. Book early: supply is limited and prices climb closer to your dates.
The weather is reliable
Because Curaçao sits below the main hurricane belt, it's warm, dry, and sunny for most of the year, with steady trade winds keeping even hot days comfortable. That said, it's not rain-free — the fall months, especially October through December, tend to be a bit wetter, though showers here are usually short and often pass overnight rather than washing out a whole day. For the most part, the season you pick is less about chasing good weather and more about balancing crowds and budget.
Don't get caught out by the immigration card
This is the big one. Every visitor arriving by air must complete a free online Digital Immigration Card before departure — it replaced the old paper form and is checked at check-in and again on arrival. Fill it out within 7 days of your trip at the official site, and be careful: several lookalike sites charge $50–$100 for what is completely free.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen (and actually wear it)
The sun is intense this close to the equator, even on cloudy days. Regular sunscreen is discouraged because it harms the coral, so pack reef-safe SPF — and bring more than you think you'll need, especially for boat days with no shade.
Pack water shoes and pack light
Many beaches have coral or rocky entries, so water shoes save the day at snorkeling coves. Otherwise, keep it light and breezy — it's warm day and night, so linen, swimsuits, and one nicer outfit for a sunset dinner is really all you need. Leave the jeans and jackets home. One quirky rule: skip camouflage clothing, which is prohibited across the Dutch Caribbean.
Carry a little cash
US dollars and cards work almost everywhere, but keep some cash on hand for beach entrance fees, chair rentals, parking, and small snack stops where card machines aren't always working.
