The Best Things to Do in Curaçao

Curaçao isn't a place where you need to chase every attraction. The best first trip is about choosing a handful of stops that add variety to your week — a little color, a little history, a little nature, a little adventure — and leaving plenty of time for the beach.

Here are the experiences we'd build a first-time week around.

Wander colorful Willemstad

Curaçao's UNESCO-listed capital is the island's storybook heart: candy-colored Dutch-Caribbean buildings, the floating Queen Emma Bridge, waterfront views, and the historic Floating Market. Give yourself a half-day to walk Punda and Otrobanda, cross the bridge, and browse. It's the easiest way to experience the island beyond the beaches — and it's free.

Quick tip: skip the hunt for parking in Punda and use the Renaissance Mall garage — it's an easy walk to the bridge.

Take a boat day to Klein Curaçao

If you do one splurge, make it this. Klein Curaçao is a tiny uninhabited island about 90 minutes offshore — blinding white sand, electric-blue water, an old lighthouse, and a proper castaway feel. It's a full-day catamaran excursion with an early start, and one of the most memorable days you can have here.

Snorkel with turtles at Playa Piskado

One of the island's most special free experiences: sea turtles feed close to shore at this working fishing beach, and you can often watch them right from the pier. Early morning is best.

Cool off in the Hato Caves

An easy change of pace from beach days — a guided walk through limestone caverns, chambers, and bits of island history near the airport. Great for families and a nice midday break from the sun.

See the wild side at Shete Boka

For a complete contrast to the calm beaches, Shete Boka National Park is where the open Atlantic crashes into rugged limestone — dramatic cliffs, blowholes, and crashing waves. It's a short visit that makes your whole week feel more varied.

Quick tip: Wear sturdy shoes; the terrain is rocky.

Spot wild flamingos

Curaçao has a few easy roadside spots to see wild flamingos wading through the salt flats. It's a quick, photogenic add-on when you're already driving nearby — treat it as a 15-minute stop, not a destination.

Knowing what to do is easy. Fitting it all into a week is the hard part.

All of the spots featured in this post are spread across the island — do them in the wrong order and you'll spend your trip zigzagging.

Our 7 Days in Curaçao: The Complete First-Timer's Guide tells you how long to allow for each sight, current costs, and exactly where each one fits in your week — plus which day to reserve for Klein Curaçao — so your days actually flow. It also includes best areas to stay, top beaches to check-out and a flexible 7-day itinerary.

Don't try to do it all

Here's the mistake most first-timers make: cramming too much into their day.

Curaçao rewards a slower pace. Pick a few of these sites, leave real downtime between them, and let the beach days breathe. The best moments here are often the unplanned ones — a long lazy afternoon, a sunset dinner you didn't schedule, an extra hour in the water with the turtles.

Choose the stops that add variety to your trip, group them smartly, and you'll come home feeling like you saw the island without ever feeling rushed.
