When we first planned our trip, we kept asking ourselves what to do in Antigua without turning it into a rushed checklist. What we quickly realized is that Antigua is best experienced when you slow down, choose the right part of the island, and let the days unfold naturally.
After spending time exploring Antigua ourselves, the southwest coast stood out immediately. The beaches here are calm, scenic, and close together — making it easy to enjoy the island without constantly moving hotels or driving long distances.

Antigua and Barbuda instantly feels welcoming. English is spoken everywhere, the island is easy to navigate, the people are friendly, and the beaches are consistently beautiful without feeling overly developed. Overall Antigua has a beautifully laid back vibe and atmosphere that we really enjoyed.
What surprised us most, though, was how different each beach felt — even when they were only minutes apart.
The Best Southwest Beaches in Antigua (Where We Spent Most of Our Time)
If you’re deciding what to do in Antigua, prioritizing the southwest beaches is one of the best choices you can make. These were the beaches we kept returning to during our stay.
🌴 Darkwood Beach
Darkwood Beach is a visitor favorite. It’s wide and has that classic Caribbean look with soft sand and calm water. We loved how relaxed it felt — you can grab a chair, order food, and stay for hours without feeling rushed.
🌴 Jolly Beach
Jolly Beach is long, walkable, and perfect for slow mornings or sunset strolls. The area is developed with hotels, stores, and restaurants and if you like beaches where you can swim, walk, and still have amenities nearby, this is a great option.
🌴 Ffryes Beach
Ffryes Beach is one of the most visually stunning beaches we visited. The water is incredibly clear, and the surrounding hills make it feel more secluded and scenic. This is one of those beaches that looks just as good in person as it does in photos.
🌴 Valley Church Beach
Almost right next to Ffryes Beach, Valley Church Beach feels slightly quieter and more intimate. It’s a great choice if you want a peaceful beach day without venturing far. There was an area with facilities, bar, restaurant, and bathrooms but also a very long undeveloped stretch that was absolutely beautiful. In our opinion, this beach had it all!

Unmissable Experiences in Antigua (That Are Actually Worth It)
Antigua isn’t about doing everything — but there are a few experiences that genuinely stand out.
🐟 Stingray City Antigua
Stingray City is one of those experiences that’s surprisingly calm and well-run. You’re in shallow water, the guides explain everything clearly, and it feels accessible even if you’re not a confident swimmer.
This is a great half-day experience that pairs well with a relaxed beach afternoon afterward.

🌅 Shirley Heights Lookout
Shirley Heights is an absolute must. We recommend going around sunset, especially on Sunday or Thursday evening when there’s live music, food, and a lively atmosphere. The view over English Harbor is unforgettable and gives you a real sense of Antigua’s landscape. Driving in Antigua can be tricky after dark so we highly recommend considering organized transportation, such as this one or hiring a taxi.
Where We Stayed in Antigua (And Why Location Mattered)
Choosing the right place to stay made a huge difference in how much we enjoyed Antigua.
🏨 Tamarind Hills
We stayed at Tamarind Hills on the southwest coast, and it was the perfect base. The villa-style accommodations gave us space and privacy, while the elevated location offered incredible views over Darkwood and Ffryes Beach.
Being centrally located meant we could easily explore multiple beaches without spending hours in the car — which made the entire trip feel more relaxed.
